Your selected question

Q:

Why am I getting the error message ‘Charges must be shared’?

A:

If you’re making an international payment and getting the error message:

‘Charges must be shared. Please amend the charge details by selecting Remitter for Our charges and Beneficiary for Foreign bank (agents) charges.  If you are importing payments or templates the code SHA will need to be used in the relevant charges field.’

You’ll need to amend your payment to comply with the Payment Services Regulations 2017.

From 13 January 2018 all payments sent within the European Economic Area (EEA) need to have the payment charges shared between the sender and the beneficiary, no matter what currency you’re sending.

Shared charges means you pay for the charges levied by us and the recipient pays any charges levied by the recipient's bank for receipt of the funds. This rule doesn’t apply to payments outside of the EEA.

If you’re using a payment template this will need to be updated in ‘Manage templates’.

To comply with the regulation you’ll need to select ‘Remitter for our charges’ and ‘Beneficiary for Foreign bank (agents) charges’.
